French Polishing, Concerts and Cutting Braces...

It's been a pretty good week for music so far. Got to see my friends' bands play at the Royal Room and Tractor and went to hear a great program of mostly Italian contemporary violin/chamber music with the Seattle Modern Orchestra. I've never heard any of the Berio Sequenzas live, so that was a treat.

Been French polishing and pore filling with pumice. Cutting, fitting and gluing braces on a pair of soundboards that are going to the GFA in June.

Splitting Bracewood, Planing Tops and Making A Mess

Got out the hatchet, sharpened my blades and got to making a big mess in the shop today!

New Lutz Spruce Concert Model

Finally got this new guitar strung up and ready to go! Bold, balanced and complex tone. A very complete instrument that will do equally well at home as it will on stage.

  • Lutz spruce top
  • Indian rosewood back and sides
  • Spanish cedar/Honduran mahogany neck with elevated fingerboard
  • All handmade wood binding, purfling and rosette
  • Rubner tuners

New Guitars!

Plugging away here in the shop. New Lutz spruce and Indian rosewood concert model with elevated fingerboard. I'm working on a new label, but it's strung up and sounding good!

Two other concert models that I'm cleaning up and getting ready for French polishing. Long days...

New Spruce/Rosewood Concert Model and Lunch at the Beach!

Finishing up a new Lutz spruce and Indian rosewood concert model with an elevated fingerboard. Should be ready to go in about two weeks. I've got a couple more on the way.

Taking a lunch break down at the beach, playing my favorite game throwing rocks at rocks and looking out at Vashon and Blake island. One of these days, I'll move my shop over there...

Necks, Binding, Purfling and Eagles In The Park

It's been a busy and productive weekend. Got the bindings and purflings mitered and glued in. Started a batch of neck blanks. Started the final polish on a new guitar coming up later this month.

In other news, just went for a little walk around the neighborhood and saw an eagle carrying a stick out over the Sound. I also finally noticed that the big stones at Solstice Park say things on them. Makes sense that I notice it just as the Vernal Equinox approaches. Spring!

Spring Times

Preparing some new soundboards for gluing and taking walks around the neighborhood. It's already spring time!

1966 Spruce Fleta

Bill Clements from the Rosewood Guitar shop was nice enough to bring in his 1966 spruce top Ignacio Fleta guitar for me to check out this afternoon. We spent some time playing it in the showroom, comparing it to other instruments and looking inside with a mirror. It's probably the nicest Fleta that I've had the opportunity to play. Very big and elegant tone. Wish it were mine!
