New Video with Florian Palier

Florian and I shot this video a couple weeks ago and we are happy it share it with you today. It’s one of set of four pieces written for solo guitar off of his new album Bach und Ich. I just listened to the whole album for the first time and highly recommend it. It includes excellent performances of the Bach lute suite BWV 1006, violin sonata BWV 1003, three original improvistations and, of course, the Four Pieces. The more I get to know Florian’s interpretations and compositions, the more I am impressed with his musicality. Really great stuff. :)

New Florian Palier Album

I’m very proud to have my guitar used on this new album by Florian Palier. Please check out this very talented guitarist and composer. He also a two other albums, videos and published scores avaible. Here is a brief description about this latest CD from Florian himself:

“Liebe Freunde,

Dear Friends,
my new album "Bach und Ich" (Bach and me) has just arrived. It consist of works by J.S.Bach, my own compositions and improvisations.

I recorded two of my favorite works by Bach - his "Suite BWV 1006a" and his "Sonata BWV 1003", my new composition "Four Pieces" and improvisations. It can be seen as an homage to Bach – his works are historically interpreted, quoted in improvisations and “compositionally re-narrated” from my point of view.

It was recorded by Bende Panier on a guitar built by Michael Cadiz, the cover artwork was done by thebeefilms.

You can listen to and download my new album on my homepage: https://www.florianpalier.net/music and soon again in live concerts.

The score of my four pieces can be found here:

A Few Photos of Upcoming Instruments

Here are a few photos of two upcoming cedar guitars. Really happy with how these new rosettes turned out. One is based on the Torres FE09 owned by Miguel Llobet; it has also been used by H. Hauser, Velazquez and many others. The second one is my very own new rosette design using a triangle motif that I’ve been playing with for the past year. These guitars are actually amost ready for finish. I’ve just haven’t been posting anything lately…

Torres Model

Here are some photos of a recently completed Torres model that I built for the summer festival season.

  • European spruce top

  • Indian rosewood back and sides

  • Spanish cedar neck

  • Ebony fingerboard

  • Scheller tuning machines with mother of pearl buttons

  • 650mm scale length

  • 52mm nut width (42mm string spacing)

  • 57mm string spacing at bridge

Torres/Romanillos Model at Galerie des Luthiers

Things have been pretty interesting this last month to say the least. I have been making progress in the shop, but somewhat slower than usual as we are all quarantined and, as we have a 2 year old daughter, I’ve been spending much of my days playing in the yard, cooking and cleaning etc.

Here are some photos of a recently completed Torres/Romanillos model now available at Galerie des Luthiers in Lyon, France. I think that it is a fine example of this style of instrument with a very intimate and colorful maple character. I was meaning to deliver this guitar in person, but then was not able to because of the circumstances. The galerie is, of course, temporarily closed to the pubic as most everything is at the moment, but they are still available and I’m sure would love to hear from you.

First New Guitars of the Year

Finally making some progress after a longggg winter. Here are a bunch of photos of a new Torres/Romanillos model and Torres model after the first coats of shellac.

January Rosettes Etc.

A handful of photos and a couple short videos from last month. Getting rosettes ready for new Torres/Hauser and Torres/Romanillos style guitars.

New Guitars, Festivals etc.

Just strung up two new of my Modern Concert Models. The main difference between these an my more traditional Torres/Hauser/Romanillos style instruments is that they are slightly larger, stiffer and meant to project in a bigger room. They are, however, still relatively traditional by today’s standards. Spanish construction with hide glue, fan bracing, french polish finish.

1. Spruce top, Indian rosewod back and sides, cedro neck with elevated fingerboard, ebony fingerboard, 650mm scale length, 52mm nut width, 58mm string spacing at bridge, Scheller tuning machines with snakewood buttons.

2. Spruce top, Indian rosewod back and sides, cedro neck with elevated fingerboard, ebony fingerboard, Soundport with cover, 640mm scale length, 52mm nut width, 58mm string spacing at bridge, Scheller tuning machines with snakewood buttons.

Very happy with how both of them turned out. I’ll be showing the first of the two by appointment in Köln Nov. 12-14th and then at the Antwerp Guitar Festival from Nov. 15-17th. Please contact me if you would like to make an appointment otherwise or see the guitars here in Graz. The second of the two is for a client and will be shipped out in roughly two weeks.

Green Guitar Youth Festival Graz

I’ve been falling a little behind with the website updates and I’m just now getting around to some events and photos from several weeks ago.

Last month, we had the fourth annual Green Guitar Youth Festival Graz. It’s organized by two friends of mine, local guitarists José Maria Obeso and Stefan Skrilecz. It’s a new, ambitious festival and keeps getting better every year! This year opened with a beatiful solo recital by Austrian guitarist Florian Palier featuring works off of his recent CD release Poetry and Colors. It was a real treat to hear him perfoming for the first time on the guitar that I recently made for him. It's not every day that we get to see such an expressive guitarist really testing the nuances, colors and dynamics of our instruments! The Second evening was a guitar and flute duo concert with Hugo Fernando González and Maria Beatrice Cantelli. It was an energetic and musical performance; one of the best renditions of Piazolla’s Histoire du Tango that I’ve seen live. The third evening was a Gypsy Jazz concert on the Murinsel featuring a new Selmer style guitar made by a friend of mine and fellow Grazer guitarbuilder Christoph Seewald. The Sunday matinee concert began with a variety of student ensembles and finished with Rodrigo’s Concerto Andaluz. Four guitars and orchestra! The fifth and final event was a CD release show by local jazz guitarist Stefan Oser at Churcill Bar. I get see him and José play there fairly often since I live just around the corner, but this was a special night with a whole slew of guest artists.

It was a great four days and I was really thankful to be a part of it and also get to see a bit more first-hand how much work this sort of thing can be to organize. They really did an awesome job with the whole thing.
